Calgary's snow bylaws give you 24 hours after a snowfall to clear snow and ice from the public sidewalk next to your property. Miss it and the City can clear it for you and add the cost — plus a fine — to your property tax bill.
What exactly has to be clear?
The full width of the public sidewalk, down to bare pavement where possible. That includes the walk in front of corner lots on both streets — a common surprise for new corner-lot owners in Cranston, Auburn Bay and Mahogany.
The 24-hour trap
The clock restarts with every snowfall. A light dusting on Tuesday plus flurries on Wednesday means Wednesday's deadline, not Tuesday's. During back-to-back storms, once-a-week clearing is never enough.
How to stay compliant without thinking about it
