Calgary Lawn Fertilizer Calendar: What to Apply and When

Last updated September 19, 2026 · Chim Property Care, deep-south Calgary

Calgary's growing season is short — roughly May through October — so timing matters more than quantity. A steady program of four granular feedings beats one heavy dump that burns the lawn in July heat.

The calendar

  • Late May (spring wake-up): balanced starter feed as the lawn greens up and mowing begins.
  • Late June: slow-release nitrogen to push density before the heat.
  • Late August: recovery feeding after summer stress and foot traffic.
  • Early October (winterizer): potassium-heavy feed so roots store energy over winter.

Two rules that matter here

First, water after feeding — Calgary's dry air plus chinook winds dry granules fast. Second, mow high (around 3 inches) through July; taller grass shades roots and needs less water.

Lawn fertilizer is available as an extra on our lawn visits — one slow-release application per visit, timed to this calendar.
